Cambridge Gateway makes further investment in TeraView, the Cambridge based terahertz imaging business

The Cambridge Gateway Fund has invested a further £975,000 as part of a £6 million equity investment into TeraView Limited (“TeraView” or “the Company”). Amadeus Capital Partners led the round; other investors included TTP Ventures and Quester, who had also invested in the first round.

TeraView, a spin out from Toshiba in 2001, has developed a unique technology to emit and detect THz (Terahertz) light, which lies at frequencies between infrared and radio waves. The Company has an extensive intellectual property portfolio, covering both the basic technology, and applications thereof. Its proprietary technology provides a powerful platform to exploit the spectral imaging and spectral fingerprint characterisation of terahertz light not available using other types of radiation. TeraView’s principal target markets include drug formulation and discovery, bioterrorism and security screening, and medical imaging of cancer. Significant early revenues have already been secured, through the sale of terahertz engines, which it sells both directly and through partners. The Company has entered into agreements with Bruker Optics to sell its equipment into the pharmaceutical market.

Commenting on the investment, Chief Executive Officer Don Arnone said: “We are delighted with the investors that have chosen to back TeraView at a time when we are successfully taking our technology towards full commercial exploitation. Their support is crucial if the Company is to capitalise on its success in launching the world’s first Terahertz products to generate revenue in commercial applications using this unique part of the radio and light wave spectrum.”
